Fallout 3's Level Cap

I really wish the level cap in Fallout 3 was higher. I hit level 20 fast, only 3/4 of the way through the storyline, and I feel like I missed much of the game's content. Yes, I could still go to the locations, find and complete the quests, and explore the wastelands, but without experience points and the ability to get stronger, what's the point?

  • Dang, that doesn't sound cool.  I wonder why they would make a level cap that is attainable through normal playing of the game.  Maybe it would become too easy past that level?  You could just make the enemies harder though.

    Who knows.

  • My take on the level cap is the same as the way it was in the originals.  While you do gain more hitpoints and can attack slightly better as you level, the strength of your character is more based on his/her equipment.  Just because you hit the level cap, that doesn't mean that you can't get stronger.  Go scavenge for more weapons to repair, find more ammo and Stimpacks(health), keep your Karma up (or down as case may be).  Go find some NPC's to tag along with you.
Also, don't forget that you can still go find all the bobbleheads, which grant you an increase in abilities as well.

    • Yeah but I maxed out the abilities I care about long ago (lockpicking, science, speech, small guns) and the rest just feel extraneous. I've got some of the best equipment, save for the 'unique' guns, and there doesn't seem to be any armor better than the Rangers'. I tried playing a bit more, but when there's no point to killing enemies, picking locks (yay 20 caps), or doing any of that stuff it just feels hollow.

      • I can see your point.  If you're already a walking tank then there's not much more point to doing the quests.  I personally take joy out of the quests themselves.  They're not as dry and static as say, WoW's quests.  There's a lot of personality and drama to the situations that I'm able to really get involved in.
For example, I finally found Paradise Falls, so I'm trying to think how I want to bust out the slaves.  I'm purposefully not looking at guides or asking, cause I want to find out myself.  I'm considering capturing a slave just for the sake of entry, and then breaking free from the inside out.

        • Yeah, I really liked the quests too, and I hear interesting stuff about places like the Dunwich building, for example. I like to complete the quests, but without an actual reward, it feels weird to me. I guess I'll just have to wait for the DLC (here's hoping for a raise to the level cap).

          • If you have the PC version, I would recommend going to a site by the name of "Fallout 3 Nexus". You'll find whatever modifications you need. =)

  • DLC will be raising the level cap to 30 I believe, so you weren't the only person with this problem =P

  • Woo DLC! Yeah the level cap was a little irritating, but i love exploring on these games. So i just spend HOURS trampling every square centimeter of the environment.

Survival horror as a genre is difficult to get right, but both of these games manage to nail it. In the end, though, System Shock 2 really keeps up a more tense and frightening atmosphere that keeps getting more twisted as the truth of the story begins to unfold in front of you. Dead Space's dismemberment feature is interesting and gives standard shooters some strategy, but after a while it starts to feel a little routine. RPG elements are better defined, there are a greater variety of enemies, and of course co-op is always a plus.

You're thinking, why compare these two games? The answer: replayability and game length. Lumines  is fun for a puzzle game, and will likely addict you for a few hours. But in the end, you're doing the same thing over and over again. In Fallout 2, however, the world is constantly introducing new characters, locations, and challenges. Thanks to the level of character customization, you can also create a variety of playthroughs, each one different than the last. It's the reason people keep coming back to Fallout 2, while Lumines merely falls back to the wayside as 'that PSP puzzle game that was pretty popular in the past'.

Spore, while interesting in its amount of customization and amount of design available to you, doesn't manage to win any points in the gameplay department. Little Big Planet, on the other hand, offers an astounding amount of freedom when it comes to creating levels, allowing you to download them as well. In addition, it allows co-op that's easy to get into and fun to play. Spore's content can quickly run out or get tiring, but LBP's content just keeps growing.
