Then the Duke Nukem sequel, Duke Nukem 2, stayed an innocent side-scroller where Duke just went around blasting aliens.
THEN Duke's third outing set himself apart from the other typical do-good heroes that were common then, and he made himself to be a gun-toting babe-rescuing alien-destroying American anti-hero, who felt the need to visit a strip-club during his alien extermination.
Conquer was another character that had a similar transformation. He was originally meant to be an innocent squirrel to star in his own light-hearted adventure game on the N64. His game was scrapped, but he became a racer on Diddy Kong Racing. THEN he has his infamous Bad Fur Day and suddenly he's a drunk and developed quite the potty mouth. Very odd for a Nintendo console.
Anyway, these are just two examples, but I want to ask the MFG community: What characters are you able to recall that have undergone drastic transformations throughout their video game careers?
Discussion: Drastic Character Changes
Y'know, I was reading @GamerGirl 's post on one of the blogs about how she really enjoys the classics like Doom and Duke3D and Commander Keen. It made me remember that the original Duke Nukem actually used the same game engine. There were very stuttery sidescrolling games, but a blast back in the day. Then the Duke Nukem sequel, Duke Nukem 2, stayed an innocent side-scroller where Duke just went around blasting aliens.

Those two you mention are probably the biggest examples I can think of for what you're talking about.
In movies, Mission: Impossible comes to mind. The first one, Ethan Hunt is a smart guy and very crafty. Then comes the second, where he runs around a bunch and shoots people with his long hair and his two guns. I only mention this because MI:2 seems to be on everyday on Showtime or whatever channel it is.
I think the real Nintendo characters( Mario, Peach, etc) stayed pretty true to what they've always been, which is good.
Man, I'm totally blanking out on this.
I have a few more characters in mind, but I don't want this whole blog to be just me talking :P
I will make one more mention. Leon Kennedy from RE2 made a fairly dramatic change from being a somewhat whiny police officer to a gov't trained John McClain pretty abruptly. I welcomed that though.
I also enjoy how while Mario hasn't changed too much, his personality has evolved quite a bit. You always saw him smiling on the cover art, but now thanks to current gen systems, he's giggling and making exclamations left and right despite the circumstances.
I was thinking about the Kirby series, but he has pretty much stayed his old stupid self through and through. He never thought his actions through or did any research, and ended up going on a needless violent spree. Example, in Kirby's Adventure on the NES, Dedede shattered and spread the Star Rod around to hide it from Nightmare. Kirby beats the crap out of him and then realizes "Oh snap Nightmare!"
And during Dynablade on Kirby Superstar, he beats up a bird for stealing food, just to realize that the bird is just trying to feed her chicks.
Kirby's a jerk.
One that is a classic and has changed over the years [there's actually a video game coming out continuing where it left off] would have to be Wolfenstien.
I am looking forward to the upcoming game because of the new look and the continued plotline.
