It was pretty impressive how he was able to just keep talking and talking without needing any notes and stuff. I found it incredibly interesting. He explained a little backstory of id Software (which he pronounced eh-d, not I.D. software, so that settles that :D ), and he also talked about his current development on the new PC game Rage. He also talked about his current interest in iPhone development and he even demoed Doom for the iPhone that he's already developed (still in progress).
What's next for his iPhone projects? Quake :) and then Quake 2 :D Then Doom 3 (jk, jk)
He answered a lot of questions, even after the panel was officially over. Sorry @justin , but I didn't ask about the rocket jumping :( HOWEVER, I did ask him "With the current beta release of Quake Live, and with Battlefield Heroes coming out soon, not to mention your current desire to work on porting Doom and Quake and Wolfenstein to the iPhone, do you see a possible trend developing where companies will make less games that are more accessible and less hardware demanding, and do you think this is a possible direction that should be developed?"
He replied that he couldn't forsee many more games such as Quake Live to come to fruition, and that few games would work as well online as Quake 3 Arena does, and that he was very fortunate that they already had such a well established game and engine to bring to a browser-based app. Also, he said that the ad-supported nature of Quake Live isn't doing well enough to support the game by itself, and that by the time it comes to full release, there will be a premium that will be charged.
Also later on I asked him if he had any comments or thoughts he'd like to share on the somewhat downfall of 3D realms, and surprisingly the room suddenly got very serious and he talked about how tough it can be to try and keep a project going for so long. He expressed how he wishes there was a way that id could have helped them out and how unfortunate it is to see a team go like that.
I took some video of a few questions that I'll be uploading to my youtube sometime this week (hopefully). I'll let you guys know when I do that. It'll be an MFG exclusive!!!
*UPDATE*
Sorry I haven't gotten that video uploaded yet, guys. I took the video on my gf's digital camera and I haven't even been over there since we got back Sunday. I've had a fever all week so I have been pretty useless this week :P
*UPDATE 6/4*
I still don't have the Carmack video (hopefully I will this weekend), but here's a little montage I made of some costumes and events at A-Kon 20. Hope you enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Si7CerCcPMs
Whelp, I'm back from A-Kon
And John Carmack was a totally cool dude! He explained the panel as "Basically I get a chance to ramble on about game development and technology and they'll just let me know when I'm out of time."It was pretty impressive how he was able to just keep talking and talking without needing any notes and stuff. Premium for Quake Live. Makes sense. I know that there is far less money coming in for ads these days, so subscription based services are kinda the only other way to make money in this crappy economy.
Sweet for the video! I'll keep an eye out here for it!
also it's so awesome that you got to meet John.
I'm not too excited about iphone gaming for the reason that apple can jump off a cliff and give up. either that or give alllll the rights to the company to sony. then id start taking an interest in apple products.
... i dont like apple :(
I'll watch the videos once you have em up :D
