A lot of fantastic masterpieces have come from games. I'm not going to gush about Uematsu because everyone on this site is probably familiar with his work already and there's plenty of praise that goes around the it's pointless to even really comment on.
Being that Metal Gear Solid is my favorite game franchise, I fell in love with Harry Gregson Williams' tunes that he was able to turn up for Snake Eater. The slow but twangy bass lines as you sneak through the jungle were just absolutely perfect. He also captured the emotions in Guns of the Patriots just as well with the Old Snake theme. Very touching.
Some songs in games just make me feel motivated to push forward with everything I got. The Corneria and Space Armada themes in Star Fox are a shining example. Also, the level music for Kid Icarus just screams adventure. And it goes without saying how epic the Wily theme is in Mega Man 2.
However, my favorite game song has to be the Gangplank Galleon theme from the first Donkey Kong Country. It starts out as an uppity pirate jingle, till it slowly fades and kicks your rear with an awesome drum roll, rising back up with just a deep grungy bass line. That one song just gave me the perfect feeling of "after everything I just been through, it all comes to this". I find myself purposefully prolonging the fight just so I can listen to the awesome song.
I ask from the viewers of this site to list off some of your personal favorite game songs. Yes yes, we all know about the Super Mario theme and Zelda, but what about some of the great songs in popular games that don't get their right amount of love?
Why I like Video Game Music
While I definitely have my favorite radio stations to listen to (mostly classic rock, in case you guys are wondering), there's almost an equal amount of time that I spend listening to game music and remixes. Someone once asked me why that is. Why do I enjoy just listening to music when I could be silently singing songs to myself? The answer was simple. Radio music tries to tell you something, or make you think. Game/Movie music is trying to make you FEEL something.A lot of fantastic masterpieces have come from games. From the new games, I would say locoroco has some pretty rocking and memorable tunage.
Final Fantasy has always had great music, but everyone knows that =P
The music right after alert in MGS and also its theme music are awesomely awesome.
I used to have a plugin for winamp that would let me play music files extracted from NES roms. Castlevania and Mega Man were always up there, along with that one song from Rush'nattack and a couple from the TMNT game.
I also cant help but mention Saria's Song from Zelda, one of the most addicting songs ever.
I can whistle it now....
