Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. II Overall Comparison The original SMB would not be out done until the 3rd rendition. Mario II was not even remotely as good as the first. The problem with the second game is that it didn't take the good from the first and improve. Instead, it recreated much of the plot and gameplay. As far as villians go, you just can't beat Bowser. WART was like a baby bowser, all soft and cuddly.
The original earned it's spot as a classic. And while the second may deserve some credit for weird shit (using Birdo's own eggs to kill them) it just isn't in the same league.

What we know as Super Mario 2, Japan knows as Super Mario USA. What Japan knows as Super Mario 2, we know as Super Mario: The Lost levels.
The lost levels was released to the US as part of Super Mario All-Stars for the NES. The original Japanese Super Mario 2 (same game) is available on the Wii's virtual console.
Super Mario 2/USA is actually just a graphical and audial conversion of the Famicon Disk System game, Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic. It was released only in Japan, but changed to Super Mario 2 for the US to attract more buyers. Thats why you have Wart instead of Bowser, Shy Guys instead of Goombas, and turnips instead of fireballs. But hey, it gave us Bob-Ombs, and who doesn't love Bob-Ombs?!
