  • Warcraft 2 is better than Warcraft 3
    Overall Comparison
Simply put, Warcraft 3 failed to live up to its predecessor.

W2 was an awesome sequel to the original and really expanded, not only the storyline and plot, but the playable units as well.  It increased the strategy portion of the game and added a new frontier with water units.  It was a great game for its time and probably the best RTS until Starcraft.

W3 lacked in nearly every aspect.  It's story was weak.  It focused so much on the heroes that it made the strategy feel awkward.  C&C does a good job or increasing the units abilities with experience but in W3 that balance is off.  I just ended up trying to kill everything with my hero to get its level up.

My hope is that Starcraft 2 does not do what Warcraft 3 did.

  • I did buy W3 when it came out.  I'm not totally sure why.  I think it was because everyone else seemed to want it, so I wanted it too.  I played it a little bit, but it just didn't have the gameplay that I was expecting.

Right now, the only good thing going for W3 is DOTA.  I haven't played it yet, but it looks pretty sweet.  The normal game was just kinda lame for me and doesn't give me much reason to want to go back and play it.

    • DOTA is amazing, but has a pretty tough learning curve.  I haven't mastered it myself, but gaming with at least one experienced friend to help with item builds and strategies is probably the easiest way to get going. I can see why it's regarded as one of the best game mods ever.

If DOTA were an ebay user: RECOMENDED SELR A+++++++++++++

Edit: Also, if you get a chance, check out the Tower Defense mods.  They're not for everyone, but they're very popular as well.  Element TD and Gem TD are what my roommates play.

  • The main reason why W3 is better than W2 is the online community. The map creation tools are a lot more powerful than starcraft and that led to a lot of great maps being created. I actually think that the hero system was a great addition to the game. The main idea is that the hero still needs support. I've had just as much fun with w3 as I did with starcraft but w2 there was melee and a campaign and that was it. So unless you like playing melee a lot the game gets boring. With the campaign tools it allowed for people to make there own maps and stories and challenges.

    • I never hit up the online community so I may have missed a big and fun portion of the game.  I liked where the hero system was going but maybe I just never got the hang of it too.

      • You should dust off your copy and go online. Granted the game is at least half filled with DotA but there are a lot of other ones out there that are fun.

    • Yea, I never did the online stuff either.  DOTA really does intrigue me currently though.

  • If Blizzard somehow screws up Starcraft 2, I don't know if that is a forgivable offense.  I will give them time to address any balance issues with races, as the patches and changes are what gave us the great balance of the original.

  • My favorite part of Warcraft 3 is the addicting Tower Defense game.  DOTA is good, but me, my gf, and her brothers always enjoy a casual game of tower defense.
